Welcome to new perspectives and sources on the elaine massacre of 1919. The panel is devoted to advancing our understanding of the horrific series of events that began just over 100 years ago in which africanamericans were hunted down by a paranoid and enraged crowd of whites inside delta arkansas. I want to recognize first the work guy lancaster did in helping to organize this panel. Unfortunately he had to change his plans to join us and participate. All three of our scholars here on this panel are contributors to a book edited by guy lancaster and we are shamelessly plugging that right here. The the elaine massacre and arkansas a century of atrocity and resistance, 1819 to 1919. Full disclosure, im in there too. But this is not about me. I want to introduce all three of our panelists first, and they will each present for about 20, 25 minutes. Or what were going to talk about tonight is something far more than that. I want to really not so much talk about these gentlemen and ladies, but to use them as an example of what america used to make. These gentlemen, three of them, are world war ii merchant mariners. This was an effort we had now under way to provide
Historical society. The Washington County Historical Society purchased the house in 1967 from paris green. The house is built in 1853 by Jonas Tebbetts who was from New Hampshire but came to arkansas in 1838 to study law in van buren. And once he passed the bar and was traveling the law circuit, he came up into fayetteville and he happened to meet Matilda Winlock so he and matilda got married in 1847. In february of 1862, the confederates were being driven out of missouri and down here into arkansas. And as they were being driven down here in arkansas, they came through the town of fayetteville and decided to burn all the confederate stores and they threw open like where all the food was held and where the ammo was held and things like that and basically the soldiers just sort of ransacked the towns and said that some of the citizens participated in this ransacking, also, but it was a pretty dark time for the citizens of fayetteville. And headquarters house was directly threatened when
