Special voting in the Eastern Cape got off to a rocky start with the taxi violence in Mthatha, stabbing of an IEC officer and glitches at polling stations.
The Eastern Cape government said three of the 43 firearms confiscated from taxi operators and guards in Mthatha over the weekend were directly linked to a deadly shooting incident which claimed the lives of three people in the Ntywenka Village of Nqanqarhu.
Police minister Bheki Cele has appointed two high-ranking officials to form a team to investigate taxi violence in Port St Johns amid allegations that government officials and police were themselves involved in the taxi industry, while Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane has appealed to the president to deploy the military.
