European markets are called to open lower today, as rising coronavirus cases in several countries prompts fears that tighter lockdown rules may be needed.
In the US, Democrats are continuing to call for president Trump to be removed from office with just nine days left in the White House.
In commodities, the rally in oil prices last week looks set to partially reverse today as a surge in coronavirus cases hampers the outlook for the recovery in fuel demand.

Coronavirus cases in the UK remain at worrying levels, and the latest legislation for the third national lockdown allows for measures to remain in place until the end of March. The vaccine rollout programme is underway, but before everyone has been vaccinated the Government is urging people to stick to the current lockdown rules to get the rate of Covid transmission down in the UK.

UK records another 53,285 coronavirus cases, 613 deaths
Another 53,285 people in Britain have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 2,542,065, according to official figures released on Friday.
Another 613 have died within 28 days of a positive test, bringing the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain to 74,125, the data showed, Xinhua news agency reported.
The latest figures were revealed as British government advisers urged making the wearing of face masks mandatory in workplaces, schools and crowded outdoor spaces to help control the new Covid-19 variant, which is said to be 70 per cent more transmissible.
