The Pushkar Singh Dhami government is likely to table the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the Uttarakhand Assembly during the upcoming session, sources in the know of the developments said.
Uttarakhand House is likely to approve the UCC Bill next month, becoming the first state to enact the Uniform Civil Code. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has announced that a panel is finalizing the draft law. The UCC was a key electoral promise of the BJP in the 2022 assembly polls. The drafting panel, headed by former SC judge Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai, has received over 2.3 lakh suggestions and interacted with 60,000 people and political parties.
The five-member committee, which is headed by Supreme Court retired judge Ranjana Desai, includes former judge Pramod Kohli, former chief secretary of the Uttarakhand government Shatrughan Singh, social activist Manu Gaur and Doon University VC Surekha Dangwal. The panel toured the state and took suggestions from the public to complete its task of preparing the draft report for the implementation of UCC in the state. The committee may submit its report to the state government before the beginning of the session of the state assembly.
