Vote for the Erie Canal Museum’s top gingerbread gallery bakers Updated Dec 16, 2020; Facebook Share This year’s panel of judges recently completed scoring submissions in the 35th annual gingerbread gallery at the Erie Canal Museum in downtown Syracuse. This year’s judges were Tykemia Carman of Crave Dessert Studio who’s been featured on Food Network’s “Christmas Cookie Challenge”, Rebecca Riley of Peace, Love and Cupcakes at 121 W. Fayette St., and Brandon Roth of CNYCentral. In all, 31 gingerbread submissions were judged on the basis of overall appeal, originality, difficulty and creative use of materials. Top bakers in the Youth, Family/Group and Senior categories are honored with ribbons. Cash prizes go to the top three winners in the Confectioner category, and a special ribbon is awarded to the baker whose work is judged to best represent the Erie Canal.

The way Tykemia Carman looks at it, getting a chance to appear on the Food Network’s show “Christmas Cookie Challenge” was rewarding in itself. Spoiler alert: Carman, owner of Crave Dessert Studio in Syracuse, didn’t win the $10,000 prize in the episode that aired Monday night. But she held her own: She made it past the first round and was battling to the very end. Judges Ree Drummond and Eddie Jackson praised her decorating skills and the detail work of the piping on her final entry, a 3D cookie Christmas tree adorned with the “leaves” of desert succulent plants.

Tykemia Carman, owner of Crave Dessert Studio, is one of five contestants on tonight’s episode of the Food Network’s Chistmas Cookie Challenge. The episode, called Christmas is Heating Up, airs at 10 p.m. on the Food Network. (It’s on again at 1 a.m. Tuesday).
