Two-Minute Drill: SEMO To Host USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals in April

1:56 Southeast Missouri State University will host the 2021 USA Gymnastics Women s Collegiate National Championships at the Show Me Center on April 10-11. Team finals and the all-around competition will be held April 10, while event finals will take place April 11. The two-day Championships will feature gymnasts from five Division I, Division II and Division III colleges and universities and will determine the national team, all-around and individual event champions and medalists. The qualifying teams include Centenary College, Lindenwood University, Texas Woman s University, the United States Air Force Academy, and SEMO. Single-session and Two-Day Passes for the event are currently available online at GoSoutheast.com/USAG.

Two Minute Drill: Saine and Thompson Awarded All-OVC Honors

1:51 LaTrese Saine and Tesia Thompson were each named to the 2020-21 All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team. Saine was also awarded OVC Defensive Player of the Year. Saine is the second Redhawk in school history to earn OVC Defensive Player of the Year after Adrianna Murphy nabbed the laurel in 2017-18.  The redshirt senior from West Memphis, Arkansas, ranks second in the entire country and first in the conference with 94 total blocked shots (3.76 blocks/game) this season. Saine has also pulled down 216 total boards (8.6 rebounds/game), good for second in the league. She ranks second in the OVC with eight double-doubles, averaging 10.4 points per game. 

Two Minute Drill: Redhawk Student-Athletes Awarded Conference & National Honors

1:44 Several Redhawk student-athletes earned recognition this week: Sophomore libero Tara Beilsmith was named the Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Co-Defensive Player of the Week; senior guard Tesia Thompson was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week; and baseball senior Tyler Wilber was ranked among the best shortstops in the nation by D1 Baseball. Beilsmith led the Redhawks defense with 41 digs in two matches Sunday as SEMO swept Eastern Kentucky. The Weldon Spring, Missouri native, posted 16 digs in the doubleheader opener before tallying a season-best 25 in the afternoon tilt. She added eight assists and two service aces. Thompson, paced the Redhawks women’s basketball offense this past week with 56 points (18.7ppg) as SEMO won two of its three road contests. She averaged a double-double for the week, chipping in 33 rebounds (11.0rpg).

Two-Minute Drill: SEMO Softball Predicted First in the OVC

1:52 Southeast Missouri s flight was on its descent to the Tampa International Airport for a tournament hosted by the University of South Florida when Head Coach Mark Redburn s cell phone had just enough service to take a call. The call was from his counterpart at USF, who let Redburn know the tournament the Redhawks were travelling to play in was cancelled. Soon after that, Redburn was informed that his season was over once the NCAA voted to suspend play due to a global COVID-19 pandemic. SEMO was 12-5 when its season abruptly shut down. The Redhawks won nine in a row and posted a 9-1 record in their first 10 games. 

Two-Minute Drill: Redhawks Selected to Finish Third in the OVC

1:47 SEMO women s tennis was selected to finish the 2021 season third in the Ohio Valley Conference. Romana Tarajova was also named to the preseason top 10 player rankings for a second-straight season.   In the small sample size that was the 2020 season, SEMO fashioned a 4-6 non-conference dual mark with victories over Saint Louis, Lipscomb, Missouri State and Kansas City. The 2019 Redhawks finished as semifinalists at the OVC Championship and compiled a 12-10 record with a .500 mark (4-4) in conference. The first round victory in 2019 marked the first win at the Championship in 16 years for SEMO. Last weekend, the Redhawks played tough at SEC-opponent Mizzou, dropping the first of two matches by a close 4-3 score.
