so today s new conference there in egypt is raising so many more questions. i want to bring in our panel now, joining me from new york is jonathan gillian, and mary schiavo as well. egyptian officials saying it s too soon to declare that this was a bomb, despite your opinion, investigators implying that there was some sort of bomb or explosion on-board. and the question of this noise at the end of that recording. still needs more investigation, according to to the official than we just heard from. so mary, does this fill in some blanks for you or does this simply open up more questions in your view? well, there was some important takeaways from the press conference, and yes, they re right to center in on this noise because deciphering the noise and the akousic fingerprints if you will of such a noise has been a task that investigators have faced in tw 800, the plane that exploded off
suspicions we have been hearing from the united states and uk that someone got a bomb on this plane. richard quest is joining me. also fred planken is standing by in london. richard, first to you. so cockpit voice recorder. tell me about what they are finding. if the report is true, there s no reason to believe it s not, what they are saying is that on the cockpit voice recorder there is a split second of noise and parameters before the thing just goes dead. the power is cut. and this is exactly the same as we saw with mh-17 over ukraine and tw-800 off the long island sound. it s this split second and it s a millisecond where you hear an explosion of some description. and you see all the parameters go haywire before the power is
aircraft, there was a pressure wave and on the cockpit voice recorder there s just a millisecond before obviously the a aircraft is hit, the power is cut and the plane is destroyed. and i m guessing that what you re talking about on this particular cockpit voice recorder is something similar. it s quite common. we had it with tw-800. if there was an explosion, bomb or fuel or whatever it might be, the cockpit voice recorder, the microphones would have picked up that moment just before everything came to an end. what scenarios could cause that kind of heat flash scene on satellites? obviously, the first because it s at altitude, planes don t fall out of the sky for no
take down an aircraft over 30,000 feet. this plane itself was over 30,000 in sinai. i don t know if a terrorist group that has the capability to do that. that is a serious piece of equipment with some people that had a lot of training. you can t just roll something out and take a plane like that down at that altitude if you re a terror group. so just to explain for our viewers a surface-to-air missile that you put over your shoulder. can t do it. rpg. not enough. mary, the plane dropped off the radar 23 minutes into the flight well after takeoff, does that timing give you any clue about whether or not it was a mechanical issue or something else? well, unfortunately the timing puts it squarely into either camp. it could squarely be in mechanical issue. i can name several crashs that have a signature like that. tw-800 for one it was a few minutes into the flight, gotten up to it wasn t as high as this but then a catastrophic explosion in the fuel tank brought it down. also
