Scrutiny of illegal foreign providers to be intensified

Scrutiny of illegal foreign providers to be intensified The Nigerian government will continue to closely monitor illegal foreign higher education providers trying to get a foothold in the country’s education space amid a growing demand for qualifications that cannot be satisfied by existing private and public universities. This follows the release by the National Universities Commission (NUC) earlier in February of a list of about 60 illegal universities, which were shut down because they failed to meet the minimum education standards. In an interview earlier in February with University World News, Ben Goong, the information and publicity director of the federal ministry of education, made it clear that foreign institutions providing sub-standard education were not welcome.

Ministry orders vice-chancellors to start with classes

Ministry orders vice-chancellors to start with classes Ben Goong, spokesperson for the ministry, confirmed the decision to University World News, but it has not been welcomed by everyone in the higher education sector. The government’s confirmation of the restart of educational activities on 18 January was met with opposition on several fronts. Staff and students are anxious as five professors, including a former vice-chancellor, have reportedly died due to COVID-19, according to local media. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned that the absence of anti-COVID protocols on campuses may endanger the lives of students and staff. Some vice-chancellors of public universities are considering compliance with the instructions of Adamu Adamu, the federal minister of education, that campuses should reopen, but this could place them on a collision course with ASUU.
