that every other american has. and so i think that you will see over time that this right for americans to marry whomever they wish to marry will be extended to every american, and it will happen in every state. it may take another supreme court decision to do it, but this issue will progress and it will progress with millions of rank and file republicans joining the cause for liberty and for equality. incrementally on the way there, we get these moments like what just happened last night and then this morning in new mexico, where a judge weighs in and says, yeah, there s no law on this issue in new mexico, but i am ordering the county clerks to tgo ahead on this. we saw the supreme court ruling striking down the defense of marriage act. as a liberal who supports gay rights broadly, i look at those court rulings and see, you know, progress. i see things marching forward. do conservatives look at moments like that, though, and say we don t want these things to come from the court?
elections in those small margins. that s what they re trying to accomplish. judy, the lawsuits are being done under section 2 of the voting rights act, if i understand that correctly. if left standing by shelby county decision the court handed down earlier this year. what do you say to folks who say, hey, look, voting rights act still in operation, government could use section 2. they re going to work it out in courts. there s no problem here. well, chris, i mean, it s important that the supreme court took an ax to the voting rights act and actually when they got rid of section 4 which really meant section 5, it means we can t prevent discrimination before it happens. it was a really important tool. that s not going to stop us. it s going to be a harder road for us to tgo through. we re going to bring the litigation. the department of justice. thank goodness attorney general holder is there at that moment. he was able to push their resources from their section 5 preclearance part o
now, immigration reform. five seconds after the 2012 election results were announced, even lots of republicans and conservative pundits agreed that there was really no excuse to keep not fixing our stupid and broken immigration system which has been stupid and broken for decades. it has been stupid and broken for so long because of congress inability to get it fixed. the previous republican president could not even get his own party in congress to tgo along with his effort to fix the system, but in 2012, after losing the presidency to a democratic president, who went from 67% of the latino vote in 2008, to 71% of the latino vote in 2012, as mitt romney just got trounced, after the 2012 election results, even republicans were conceding it was time to fix the immigration system. and thus was born a vague mi

the i think what the republican party desperately want s for ths issue to tgo away. every time they lose a court decision, every time they loose a vote in that state, that means one more state they never have to talk about gay marriage again. nine years ago they wanted to put it on the table, now they re happy to have it off the table. exactly. the immigration issue, the issue doesn t go away once you vote on it. the republican base will still be angry about it. you ll still have ongoing policy issues. you re also going to bring in 10 million or 11 million people. it s much more significant. brian fisher announced an opponent of marriage equality, on our knees for america to pray, to pray for america. there are going to be dead enders in the republican base. there s also a sense of i think capitulation. you re in some ways seeing what you saw, to go really far back, the scopes monkey trial. like a waterloo.
