事件は午後１１時前、閑静な住宅街の一角で発生。将太さんは直前、当時１５歳だった知人の女子生徒と連絡を取り合い、合流していた。２人は現金など何も奪われていなかったことなどから、将太さんの交友関係やトラブルの有無を中心に捜査は進んだ。
事件当時の目撃証言は女子生徒だけ。自動販売機の前で２人で話し込んでいたところ、１０メートルほど離れたポールに座っていた髪の長いジャージー姿の若い男が突然、ナイフを振り下ろした、と証言していた。
だが、将太さんの周辺にトラブルは見当たらず、通り魔的な犯行の可能性も含め、捜査対象を拡大。目撃証言や物証が少なく捜査は難航した。事件から６日後、現場近くの側溝から凶器のナイフが発見され、初動捜査の遅れを批判する声も上がった。
