Taipei, May 20 (CNA) Hundreds of people across Taiwan face a fine of up to NT$15,000 (US$536) for not wearing a mask in public, just one day after the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) raised the COVID-19 alert to Level 3 nationwide.
In Kaohsiung, where 13 domestically transmitted infections have been recorded, Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) said Thursday the city will issue 633 tickets for violations of the CECC guidelines that occurred over the past 24 hours.

Taipei, May 7 (CNA) Zhang Congyuan (張聰淵), founder of contract shoe maker Huali Industrial, took the title as the richest person in Taiwan, with a net worth at US$13.8 billion, according to Taiwan s Richest 2021 list released by Forbes.
It was the first time for the low-key, self-made tycoon, to top the Forbes top 50 billionaires list in Taiwan.
Huali Industrial owns production facilities in China, Vietnam and Dominica, and its international customers include Nike, Puma, UGG and Vans, the magazine said.

Taipei, April 7 (CNA) If the current drought continues, two major water supply reservoirs in the southern county of Chiayi do not have enough water to last two more months, an official at Taiwan Water Corp. (TWC) said Wednesday.
The daily average water consumption in Chiayi is about 300,000 cubic meters, according to Wu Chieh-ming (吳界明), deputy director of TWC s Chiayi branch office.
Yunlin County breaks ground on glove puppetry art center

Taipei, March 13 (CNA) The Yunlin County government broke ground Friday on Taiwan s first art center dedicated to preserving the art of glove puppetry, and expects the center to open in May 2023. Glove puppetry represents part of Taiwan s image, and Yunlin is the hometown of glove puppetry, said Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan (張麗善) at the groundbreaking ceremony at the site in Huwei Township.
The county has the largest number of registered glove puppetry groups in Taiwan 127 and three studios dedicated to the craft, Chang said, and hoped the center will help preserve and develop the traditional art and connect it with the international puppetry art world.

Taipei, Feb. 11 (CNA) Infected cherry trees in the Alishan National Forest Recreation Area have greatly improved after being treated by a Japanese-trained tree doctor, and as a result this year s cherry blossom season will be especially stunning, according to Chiayi Forest District Office.
Cherry blossoms have been a fixture in the Alishan area of Chiayi County, southern Taiwan, for more than a century, after the Japanese government began planting them in large numbers in 1918, said Lee Ting-chung (李定忠), deputy director of the Chiayi Forest District Office.
