La Bomba En Route: Southern Hemi Swell Rising Across Americas The largest south swell of year unloads late week, weekend for West Coast of Americas Kevin Wallis Friday is peak day for Mexico/Central America – largest swell of the year so far California builds Friday, peaks over weekend As hinted at last week, it does seem like the West Coast’s spring fling with Southern Hemi swell that kicked off April is in fact turning into a full-blown affair. And things are about to get pretty heated heading into this weekend, as the biggest south swell of the season so far is set to light up every south-facing nook and cranny from Peru to Canada. We caught up with Surfline Director of Forecasting Kevin Wallis for the details:

The storm that moved off the East Coast on Thursday morning intensified overnight, generating 50-foot-plus seas along with 45-knot winds aimed at the region. Islands in the Western Caribbean like Puerto Rico will start out Saturday morning with overhead to double-overhead surf, building to triple-overhead by midday with an even more energetic pulse of swell mixing in over the afternoon hours. The surf will be very consistent with standout breaks pushing 20-foot-plus faces. Photo: Jeremiah Klein Kevin Wallis Link copied to clipboard There have been a lot of superlatives thrown at the session that went down at Maverick’s two weeks ago: Best Ever, Day of Days, All Time, etc. While it wasn’t the biggest swell at Mav’s by any means, it was amongst the largest paddle swells we’ve seen in the past decade with absolutely pristine conditions. This most recent swell was big enough to get the Maverick’s Outer Bowl working which starts to break when wave faces reach roughly 45-50 feet  and guys like Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, Pete Mel, and Kai Lenny sat out the back to chip in on those glassy monsters before screaming through the normal takeoff spot.
