The Syracuse University community did not need a 97-page report compiled by hired investigators or a diversity review created by a predominantly white Board of Trustees special committee to prove that marginalized communities are, indeed, marginalized. Yet, we got them anyway. Once again, SU’s administration, Department of Public Safety and Board of Trustees have self-exposed their detachment from the student body. It starts with former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch’s independent review of DPS. Prompted by the #NotAgainSU movement’s occupation of Crouse-Hinds Hall, Lynch was brought on to investigate DPS’ handling of the protest. The yearlong investigation amounted to 97 pages in total and ultimately concluded that there’s an erosion of trust between the SU community and DPS.

The committee which first met in December 2019, off the heels of #NotAgainSU’s occupation of the Barnes Center at The Arch was devoted to addressing issues of diversity and inclusion on SU’s campus following a series of hate incidents reported in the fall 2019 semester.

Independent Review Of SU DPS Finds Shortcomings In Response to Racist Incidents, Protests

2:00 A year-long review of Syracuse University s Department of Public Safety found that officers fell short in their response to hate crimes on the campus and following protests. Racist messages found in residence halls sparked the #notagain SU movement in November of 2019, where students held sit ins for several weeks in campus buildings.  Administrators and DPS officers were harshly criticized for not handling the matter in a comprehensive, sensitive, and transparent way as the racist incidents continued without arrests.   Student frustration mounted into February when DPS was condemned for its response to the occupation of the Crouse-Hinds Administration building.  Lynch and her team reviewed more than 20,000 documents, and interviewed 77 witnesses, including students, DPS officers, and administrators in its investigation.  They confirmed that many of the actions taken in response to the racist incidents did not recognize students fear or distress.  The report also found
