But you can see there a steep dropoff when the road just gave way. Chp says this happened near las cumbres road. People were out looking at the crumbled road despite the pretty dangerous conditions. There is no esitimated time for when it will reopen. This just in to the kron 4 newsroom. The chp has opened one southbound lane of highway17 in the santa cruz mountains. A twoway traffic switch is currently letting some northbound traffic pass by as well. One northbound lane is expected to reopen tomorrow afternoon. Engineers are still discussing the best way to clean up the mess. And re open all lanes. While minimizing the chance of yet another mudslide in that already compromised area. They are worried the erosion will continue to the point where the dam will collapse. Emergency officials said the erosion damage doesnt appear to be as bad as they thought. They are taking precautions to keep that from happening. There is a plan currently in place which would hopefully plug that hole. That would include using helicopters to drop bags of rock into the crevice and prevent any further erosion. Right now, the main shelter at the Silver Dollar fair in chico is full.
