St Louis Area Festival Organizers Eye In-Person Return After Pandemic Hiatus

Belleville News-Democrat People fill Belleville s downtown main street for the city s annual Chili Cookoff in 2016. Organizers were forced to move the event to a virtual setting last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, but they plan to return in person this year. Summers in St. Louis are marked by festivals, parades, homecomings and other outdoor community gatherings in towns large and small. But the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic uprooted those traditions, forcing public event organizers to scramble to host their events virtually or scrap them completely. “It was just sad,” said Wendy Pfeil, president and CEO of the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce. “It’s something the community looks forward to every year, and you took that away from them.”

By Doug Jenkins - WBGZ Radio   Four Metro-East communities are challenging each other to see who can become the fittest community of 2021.  Collinsville, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, and Maryville are hosting their first-ever Mayors Fitness Challenge, and all residents are invited to participate. The challenge will last eight weeks total but those interested can register any time during that period.  Edwardsville Park & Rec special events coordinator Trina Vetter tells The Big Z this is for people that either live or work in the participating communities. At the end of the competition, the community with the most minutes will win a trophy and each participating member of that community team will receive a free shirt.

Trina Vetter, the department’s special events coordinator, came up with the Tour of Lights idea to help people in the community plan their outing. “As soon as that [map] went live, within 24 hours it got much bigger and we continue to update it with more addresses,” she said.
