If your child is signed up to play baseball or softball in East Alton, Wood River, or Roxana, play will begin this month. The park and recreation departments on those three cities participate in the Tri-City summer league, and anticipation is high coming off a down year in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Wood River Park and Recreation Director Jason Woody tells The Big Z the number of kids playing this year is up slightly from last year.

He says there are some teams from Edwardsville Park and Recreation participating in a couple of age groups. Midwest Members Credit Union donated $5,000 to the program, according to Woody, who says that allows them to keep registration fees down and purchase equipment.

Four Metro-East communities are challenging each other to see who can become the fittest community of 2021. Collinsville, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, and Maryville are hosting their first-ever Mayors Fitness Challenge, and all residents are invited to participate.
The challenge will last eight weeks total but those interested can register any time during that period. Edwardsville Park & Rec special events coordinator Trina Vetter tells The Big Z this is for people that either live or work in the participating communities.

The challenge runs from February 15 to April 12. At the end of the competition, the community with the most minutes will win a trophy and each participating member of that community team will receive a free shirt.
