TribLive Taste Test: McDonald s Shamrock Shake

TribLive Taste Test team member Patrick Varine tried the Shamrock Shake in sixth grade. And he did not like it. Would the result be any different more than two decades later? Find out in this week’s TribLive Taste Test! But before you do, the shake itself has quite an interesting history, with a connection to Pennsylvania. Prior to the shake’s launch in 1970, Philadelphia Eagles tight end Fred Hill’s 3-year-old daughter was being treated for leukemia, and the Hill family regularly spent the night at the hospital during her treatments. The family saw others in the same predicament, and wondered if there was some way to help them feel more comfortable.

TribLive Taste Test: Santa Clausthaler non-alcoholic seasonal beer

Patrick Varine | Tribune-Review   TribLIVE s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. It would be irresponsible to leave Santa cookies and beer on Christmas Eve. He has to drive that sleigh an awful long way, after all. However, it wouldn’t be out of line at all to leave him a cold bottle of Santa Clausthaler non-alcoholic beer, the subject of today’s TribLive Taste Test. Actually, since it’s crafted in Germany, perhaps a room-temperature bottle would be the best approach. Created by the Radeberger Gruppe, Santa Clausthaler is created using a 40-year-old patented brewing process called “arrested fermentation.” This method extracts ingredients during the brewing process just before it produces alcohol in beer. Other varieties include Clausthaler Dry-Hopped and the recently introduced Clausthaler Grapefruit.
