MARQUETTE April is Alcohol Awareness Month, a public health program organized by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. This is a way of increasing outreach and education regarding the dangers of alcoholism and issues related to alcohol, according to an Inter-Triabal Council of Michigan press release.
Alcohol use is one of the “most important preventable risk factors for cancer, along with tobacco use and excess body weight,” according to American Cancer Society data cited in the release.
Alcohol accounts for about 6% of all cancers and 4% of all cancer deaths in the United States, but many people don’t know about the link between alcohol use and cancer, officials said. The ACS identified alcohol use linked with cancers of the: mouth, throat, voice box, esophagus, liver, colon and rectum, and breast.
