you know, sound travels much faster underwater which makes it that much more difficult to triangulate, as miky said, where this ping is coming from. then you the complications of water, temperatures that bend those sound waves, as well. so it s much more complicated than what it sounds like. and then you ve got, of course, the limited range, these rovs and auvs like the bluefin have in the case of a bluefin, maybe 24, 25 hours of time at 3ish knots which is actually fairly slow. it s like trying to find a needle while you re taking postage-size pictures of the bottom in a field the size of long island.licatecomplicated. paul gensburg, audio expert. does it concern you that we haven t heard anything in four days? well, it does. it really gives us an indication
certainly the drift depends on the current on the way down to the seafloor. i don t know exactly for an aircraft but i would imagine it s something on the order of ten minutes or something like that. minutes, not like an hour. okay. this is for michael kay. a question a lot of people are asking. it s from sheila. if they think they hear the black backes, why haven t they sint the bluefin to try to find them? what are they waiting for. they know it s the noise, but go ahead. yeah, i think what they know about the ping location works on strength. it doesn t geo locate. so if they re going along a seven-mile track what they have to do is identify the strength of the signal. they get close to where the black box is, the amplitude will increase. as it goes away, it will decrease. that doesn t geo locate where the black box is so they have to go around and come back and triangulate. effectively three to identify. we re not get that third ping pulse. that s kind of what issue is. they re
right now, i m going to michael holmes in perth, joe johns is in kuala lumpur. also joining me richard quest here with me in new york. good evening to you, sir. just when it looked like the trail was going cold, the search of flight 370 s new signals heard yesterday. what s the latest on today s search? the planes haven t headed out yet, but they will be, more than a dozen planes up in the area and more than a dozen ships out at sea, all continuing to search for the elusive jet. now, as you said, we had two more pings on tuesday, that in addition to the two from saturday. that helps those who are dragging the ping locator on loan from the u.s. navy, trying to get more pings today. what that will do is help them triangulate, if you like, think of it like looking for a cell phone using cell phone towers and the pings of the towers.
he was speaking to reporters in perth just a couple of hours ago. it is coming up to 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon. and of course this search continues as they try to find and triangulate with the information they have these four pingers detected now to try and find, locate the mh-370. and another reminder that you can always track fast-moving developments on the missing plane simply by logging onto our website. our address, cnn.com. all right, we are going to take a very short break now. but just ahead, more on what we have been reporting. this new optimism surrounding the search for flight 370. yeah, a significant turn of events. we have more details and analysis now on how officials plan to find the airliner in the not too distant future. stay with us. (dad) well, we ve been thinking about it and we re just not sure.
detections are not accurate. and so we need to you know, maintain respectful optimism and be responsible with the actions we take. because we certainly do not want to project false hope until we can confirm that our detections are good. let me just follow up on that. if and again, there is probably an obvious answer to this and just as a layman i don t understand it. is there a disadvantage to trying to tackle this on multiple fronts? at the same time, did you have the towed pinger locaters up there until day five, what other assets do you have scouring the ocean floor, in a way that you have been able to triangulate, and having under water vehicles would that interfere with having the towed pinger locater in the
