It’s Tuesday and the knitting circle has gathered by the fireplace. The elevator doors open and shut and residents trundle by. The first notes of La Vie en Rose bounce across the lobby of Treyton Oaks Towers as Richard Spalding, 97, deftly presses the ivories on a communal piano at the senior living facility.
The song was his late wife Cécile Jeunet s favorite, since their days together in France at the end of World War II.
The comforting sound of Spalding playing the piano is a familiar one at the 12-story senior center at 211 W. Oak St., but one that was silenced as coronavirus restrictions shut down normal daily life for its residents.
