On the day that Michigan Football got the 1,000th win in program history, the team won a contest that has to rank near the top of the list of most unsettling wins of the thousand. Michigan got out to an early 23-3 lead but uncharacteristic performances from both the offense and defense allowed the Terps back into the game. Timely plays from the Michigan defense to stifle the Maryland offense late closed the game out and secured a 31-24 victory, but no one can leave this viewing experience terribly reassured. As usual, the game before The Game was choppy. Michigan got the football first and went three-and-out, foreshadowing some of the struggles on offense that would pop up later in the game. They ran the football twice but JJ McCarthy threw behind the line to gain on 3rd & 5, Cornelius Johnson going out a yard short and forcing Michigan to punt. Maryland's first possession was a dink-and-dunk endeavor that marched them down into Michigan territory, but fizzled out once insid
FORMATION NOTES: PSU was a pretty standard 4-3 over for most of the game, preferring to shade a linebacker over the slot. They did not generally have to add extra guys to the box, except when Michigan got super-jumbo. They had their normal 4-3 out there for a couple Big Big Boy snaps but then adjusted: I labeled this a 7-2. PSU's problem is that while the five guys on the right are DL, the two standup guys over the TE side are 220 and 230 and they're going up against Hinton, Jones, and Barner. SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Obviously the Big Big Boys package was new and fairly important. Michigan had 56 snaps; they had 7 OL on for 13 of them and 6 for four of them. Trente Jones thus got 17 snaps; Myles Hinton got 13. Skill positions: Barner: 44 Wilson/Johnson: 38 Loveland: 34 Bredeson: 20 Morris: 10 Morgan: 5 Corum had 36 snaps to Edwards's 22; Mullings got 3 in two back sets with Edwards. WEATHER sunny 10-15 mph wind mid-50s Overview Here's a nice thing you can say about November 2023 Maryland: I have no idea what to expect from this team. That's a huge improvement from previous editions of November Maryland, where you expected a shop teacher in a helmet to play quarterback and for a series of silly things to happen en route to a 58-14 final score. The Terrapins are bowl eligible at 6-4 but got there with a 13-10 win over Nebraska in which the Cornhuskers had three different quarterbacks throw boggling interceptions; they were competitive into the fourth quarter against Ohio State and then ran off consecutive losses to Illinois, Northwestern, and Penn State. That latter isn't a huge surprise except for the fact that P
From the very first snap Michigan knew they had a problem against Manny Diaz's defense. Those defensive linemen LOVE to get into the backfield. Watch the DT lined up on the bottom hash. Our left tackle, LaDarius Henderson, is supposed to block down on that DT, normally an easy enough block. But with #91 getting upfield so quickly, the shoulder that Henderson is expecting to shove is now a back. Before the handoff is made, #91's striped helmet is past Henderson's winged one. This is Duo, Michigan's base running play. They want to double that guy down to the linebackers. Instead of two guys blocking this dude, you have zero. Play is dead. This was their problem with passing as well. Look at Chop Robinson, the DE on the top, on 3rd and 3. We're mad at Karsen Barnhart for not blocking this guy, but Barnhart's first step hasn't even landed yet and Robinson is already in the backfield. PSU had Michigan's snaps dialed in and their ends were hopping over
