seem that the uk trade deal doesn t seem that the uk trade deal doesn t seem to be that high a priority for the us president. what does that say about our standing on the global stage? to about our standing on the global state? ., . , , ., stage? to answer your question directl , stage? to answer your question directly. it stage? to answer your question directly, it probably stage? to answer your question directly, it probably doesn t - stage? to answer your question directly, it probably doesn t say| directly, it probably doesn t say very much, but it is more important economically. to have a trade deal with the ok is infinitesimally small. brexit is costing the uk economy 4.9% of gdp, put that into the context of the uk deal with canada and mexico, it s like saying for every £490 you lose, mexico might recoup a pound or two, and australia is worth about £2 as well, so all in all the prime minister has the uk in a situation where anything with the united states is going to be a
happening. now the president has taken the turn of saying the recently renegotiated trade deal with canada and mexico will pay for the wall. he touched on a criticism which is that deal has not been passed by congress yet so it hasn t been ratified. that trade deal doesn t have provisions in it that states mexico is going to pay for the wall. of course, that trade deal is not going to be putting money directly into the u.s. treasury. so a slew of problems with that. i thought it was really interesting what the president did say about nancy pelosi and chuck schumer. the president said he didn t want to have to declare a national emergency. the one person he will have to make a deal with is nancy pelosi. so it doesn t seem to bode well for those negotiations that are going to happen if he is comparing nancy pelosi to the leader of china.
can i make one other point? i think where we are headed here after listening to the president yesterday and just listening to him this morning and listening to speaker pelosi, i think he is going to invoke the national emergencies act. do you think believe that that is the right thing to do, to in effect by pass congress? are you concerned about the precedent that sets? you can imagine future presidents saying if i can t get money for my legislative priority and call it an emergency. doesn t that concern you? of course. it s not my preferred choice. you make a very salient point. but we don t want government to be shutdown. and i see no indication that speaker pelosi is ever going to concede that a physical barrier
this. let s get it answered. we come down to the 11th hour on trade in this congress. democratic voters deserve to know where hillary clinton stands on trade and the transpacific partnership. it s time for an absolute. we ve got anna edward absolute from bernie sanders. we have not, in fairness got an absolute from hillary clinton. that s a lot of people who want to know if she was still in the senate how would you have voted mrs. clinton? is this bill clinton s influence on his wife? he was a free trader. he was for nafta. what s going on here? why can t we get the absolute answer from hillary clinton? is this loyalty to her former boss? president obama, that s a question in itself. when president obama was in the united states senate, he said that he was going to do something about currency manipulation. guess what? this trade deal doesn t have anything about currency manipulation. it doesn t have anything about investor state disputes or circumventing american law. why do we have re
eric schmidt from google was asked by a reporter whether or not business leaders take offense at that laziness. eric schmidt said basically he doesn t necessarily think that s the case, but thinks, look, the u.s. can always be more aggressive in terms of seeking these trade deals and bringing more jobs home to america. rick. rick: all this talk of cooperating and cooperation with asian countries, yet this trade deal doesn t include china. what s the significance there? the u.s. appears to be sending a not so subtle signal to china by trying to work out this deal with some of the smaller asian economy, but growing asian economies. and basically reporters asked one of the president s aides here, china is miffed that they have not been invited to these trade talks and the u.s. official basically said, these are not the kind of talks you re invited to. you have to meet a certain standard and then you can come to the table for these trade talks. basically saying china has not always bee
