president obama, escorting his wife, the first lady, back into the white house to mark essentially the end of the moment of silence that has been observed throughout washington and across the nation on this very somber monday. on the steps of the capitol, the steps are absolutely packed, not only with members of congress, but with members of their staff who are there to pay tribute to the victims of the shooting over the weekend. jenna: and across the united states, all of us observeing this moment of silence. we want to bring to you tucson, arizona, as we will bring you there in a moment where you can see this moment of silence being observed as well, the president standing for just about 90 seconds or so outside the white house to observe this moment of silence, but obviously, one, again, that s being observed in different ways all across this country. mike emanuel is joining us still from the white house as we continue our coverage of this event. and mike, we heard from

tragedy in tucson starts right now. this morning, we come to you live from the university medical center in tucson, arizona. yesterday in this desert town, a gunman opened fire during a meet and greet political event at a local supermarket not far from here. six people are dead. among them, a federal judge and a 9-year-old girl. the primary target was congresswoman gabrielle giffords. she was shot in the head and is still in critical condition after surgery in the building behind me. the gunman is in custody. police are searching for a possible accomplice, and now the questions mount, what triggered this tragedy in tucson? [ sirens ] it started just after 10:00 a.m. saturday, tucson time. congresswoman giffords had been holding a town meeting with constituents in this parking lot of a local safeway. alex vilic, a young volunteer, was standing about three feet away from her. kind of shady looking gentleman came up, asked if he could talk to the congresswoman. and like
