hundreds of miles to get to the border. you ll walk another 50 feet to get across. this is a joke, this fight. that s right. and the bottom line is that institutions still matter in this country. and if you want to get a priority funded, and you re the president, you have to go to congress, build a coalition, negotiate, and the president missed that opportunity. the president could have put an offer on the table that provided a permanent path to citizenship for dreamers. permanent relief of the tps population. maybe some of my old democratic friends in a tough position. instead, he kept insisting while offering nothing, and now he s getting a bill that we could have passed in december of last year with republicans still controlling the house, and the senate. instead, he s getting the same bill and the country has made no progress on the issue of immigration. by the way, there are some smart investment that s can be made on the border. most americans agree we can do
$6 billion that president trump wants and it of course does not include the word wall, which is something that is not going to please the president at all. fred, it is important to keep in mind the way democrats will likely view this latest proposal from president trump, if it turns out to be exactly what we believe it s going to be. essentially what president trump is asking for is $6 billion in wall funding for a permanent wall in exchange for a temporary bit of protection for the dreamers and for the tps population. you know, in the past, when they ve had these negotiations, they ve involved a long-term path to citizenship for this community. so this is a very complicated and involved process. so the idea that the president can come out and say, you know, give me this funding, i ll build my wall and we ll talk about the dreamer community, does not seem to be realistic. the other thing is the
know how many people believe this is a good idea other than me. if you can get a bunch of us saying it, then i think he would change his mind. doesn t that exchange one problem with the sort of hard right on immigration for another? i already heard ted cruz say that would be amnesty. we won t get everybody, we won t get everybody democrat or republican, but i do believe there s a critical mass for the idea that the daca population, a renewable work permit is a pretty good solution for their situation right now, the tps population is going to lose their legal status and a lot of these people have been here for 20 or 30 years, you combine that with border security. i think you can get a lot of votes but not all the votes. did he indicate at all when he would use a national emergency no. can i ask you a different question? all right. jackie, let me use that reporter s question on national
this, republican senators who want this to end. why not do it, congressman, until february, to sign something at least to keep it going and continue to negotiate? what s wrong with that? there s nothing wrong with that. in fact, i think on your show before christmas, i recommended that the house pass the six appropriations bills and then a continuing resolution or a stopgap on the homeland bill. then between now and then, negotiate some border security enhancements in exchange for protection for the dreamers and the tps population. those are the temporary protective status, mostly el salvadorens. take care of those issues. by the way, if the president wanted $5.6 billion for fy-2019, why didn t he put it in his budget request? he didn t. he put in $1.6 billion. if this was sch a priority, why didn t mulvaney put it in? i don t understand this. answer that. why do you think why? do you think it s some sort of scheme or
enough. i mean cory gardner, susan collins have spoken about. but there are other senators i know are very frustrated by this, republican senators who want this to end. why not do it, congressman, until february, to sign something at least to keep it going and continue to negotiate? what s wrong with that? there s nothing wrong with that. in fact, i think on your show before christmas, i recommended that the house pass the six appropriations bills and then a continuing resolution or a stopgap on the homeland bill. then between now and then, negotiate some border security enhancements in exchange for protection for the dreamers and the tps population. those are the temporary protective status, mostly el salvadorans. take care of those issues. by the way, if the president wanted $5.6 billion for fy-2019, why didn t he put it in his budget request? he didn t. he put in $1.6 billion. if this was such a priority, why didn t mulvaney put it in? i don t understand this. answer that. why
