Mashpee Is Leading Climate Change Mitigation On The Upper Cape

Several towns across the Cape exemplify the work that is needed to mitigate climate change. In this series, in conjunction with the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative, we will review one town from each of the four quadrants that define the Cape. The towns being recognized for their work to mitigate climate change are Upper Cape—Mashpee; Mid Cape—Yarmouth; Lower Cape—Chatham; and Outer Cape—Wellfleet. From the Upper Cape, Mashpee demonstrates what it takes to reduce fossil fuel energy use, produce renewable energy and save taxpayer dollars in the process. The extent of the work in Mashpee is impressive. From active volunteer groups to town leadership, an all-out effort is being made to reduce greenhouse gases, increase renewable energy production and protect the environment through programs like the Bottle Bill.

Mashpee School Committee Candidate: Matthew Davis

As a member of the military for the past 19 years, Matthew Davis has served his country. Mr. Davis said being in the military teaches the importance of civil service and doing what is best for the group, not the individual. A group-oriented philosophy should bode well for the newest candidate running for Mashpee School Committee. Weeden are running unopposed for the two open three-year seats on the committee. “With my current career, you have to be unbiased at times. I’m not going to let what’s best for me and my family let me interfere with what’s best for the majority of families,” he said. “I try to be that person that doesn’t go, ‘What’s good for me?’ I go, ‘What’s good for who I am serving?’ That’s a part of the civil service. It’s not about

Meet the four candidates vying to be the next chairperson of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council

Nelson Andrews Jr., Kyle Bassett, Aaron Tobey Jr. and Brian Weeden are campaigning for the position.  The chairperson presides over tribal council meetings and acts as the tribe’s official spokesperson. They also serve as the coordinator over all tribal government activities. The tribe’s last two chairmen have either been convicted of federal crimes or are currently facing federal charges. Some of the candidates have cited the need to restore the integrity of the tribe’s governing process and improve accountability.  The election is currently set to take place through mail-in balloting, with Election Day scheduled for March 26. However, three tribal members, including Tobey, have sued the tribal council and the tribe s election committee to allow in-person voting and reschedule the election to a later date.
