Before the courts: Blakedown drink-driver fined

A WOMAN from Blakedown was handed a hefty fine after she admitted driving well over the alcohol limit. Last month, 65-year-old Linda Green, of New Wood Lane, drove in Hagley with 108 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35 micrograms. At Worcester Justice Centre on Tuesday (April 27) she was ordered to pay £1,225, which includes a £900 fine, costs of £135, and a £90 victim surcharge. She was also disqualified from driving for 24 months. In a separate case, Zennor McGuire, was handed a suspended sentence after she admitted driving over the limit on Cleobury Road, Far Forest, on Monday (April 26).

Mass extinctions of land-dwelling animals occur in 27-million-year cycle

Mass extinctions of land-dwelling animals, including amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and birds, occur once every 27 million years, according to a new study. US researchers performed statistical analysis on the dates of 10 recognised mass extinction events that wiped out any tetrapods – animals with four limbs. They detected a statistically significant underlying frequency of the mass extinctions somewhere in the region of 27.5 million years. These mass land extinctions align with major asteroid impacts and devastating volcanic outpourings of lava, known as flood-basalt eruptions. The researchers suggest they could be dictated by Earth s orbit in the Milky Way, which spark comet showers that have the potential to wipe out all life on our planet.
