Foundry Revenue Expected to Reach New High in 2021 with Close to 6% YoY Growth as Capacities Remain Scarce Across Industry, Says TrendForce By Staff 3 months ago TAIPEI, Taiwan–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#5g–Global foundry revenue is expected to reach US$84.6 billion in 2020 by undergoing a 23.7% YoY growth, which is the highest % growth in nearly 10 years, according to TrendForce’s latest investigations. This performance took place on the backs of several developments, including OEMs’ aggressive inventory procurement brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the “new normal” involving WFH and distance education in 1H20. The second half of the year, on the other hand, saw U.S. sanctions tilting forward Huawei’s component demand, as well as the increased penetration rate of 5G smartphones and increased 5G base station build-outs.

Chang, founder of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), and Tsao, founder of TSMC s smaller rival, United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), showed up at a ceremony held by the Hsinchu Science Park to celebrate the industrial park s 40th anniversary, where many Taiwanese tech heavyweights, such as TSMC and UMC, are headquartered.

(UMC) is expected to rise one place in the global rankings in the fourth quarter of this year to No. 3, as its revenue soars on strong demand for its 8-inch wafers, according to a research institute run by the market information advisory firm Trendforce. UMC will replace American rival GlobalFoundries Inc. as the third largest wafer foundry operator in the world, taking a 6.9 percent share of the global market in the fourth quarter, the Topology Research Institute said in a recent research report.
