Taipei, Dec. 12 (CNA) Taiwan-based contract chipmaker United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) is expected to rise one place in the global rankings in the fourth quarter of this year to No. 3, as its revenue soars on strong demand for its 8-inch wafers, according to a research institute run by the market information advisory firm Trendforce.
UMC will replace American rival GlobalFoundries Inc. as the third largest wafer foundry operator in the world, taking a 6.9 percent share of the global market in the fourth quarter, the Topology Research Institute said in a recent research report.
