Builders, designers and landscapers reveal outdoor living space trends: ‘Everyone’s looking for more oxygen’

The coronavirus will hang over this spring and summer as it did last year, but people are finding breathing room for everyone cooped up at home: They’re looking outside for a place to unwind while still staying put.
They’re clearing away backyard clutter and finding that even a tiny corner of the lawn can be a sanctuary, a beckoning connection to nature.
In some cases, outdoor living is getting the indoor treatment. Weatherproof drapes and curtains add privacy, outdoor rugs warm concrete, and quality lighting delivers mood-setting illumination after sunset to a patio or terrace, front porch or pergola.

Designer Tonya Bellusci of the Neil Kelly remodeling company oversaw a metamorphosis in Sherwood. The owners of a farmhouse wanted a grand Craftsman-style, lodge-like residence with a connected outdoor living area.
The goal, pre-COVID, was to enhance the ease of entertaining, improve the flow and function of the living spaces and visually connect the home, the new covered patio and an aluminum-clad outbuilding with one unifying style.
Bellusci and her team indeed transformed the space.
