One month into the nomination period and 27 candidates have already put their names forward for Edmonton city council in October’s election.
Unlike past election cycles, aspiring councillors have more than eight months to submit their papers and declare candidacy for the upcoming election not just one day in September. But in order to start fundraising and collecting campaign donations, candidates must have officially entered the race.

That’s why the River Valley room inside Edmonton City Hall has been a busy place for the past couple of weeks as interested residents handed in their forms and paid their deposit. The other mayoral candidates who intend to run include Cheryll Watson, the former head of Innovate Edmonton, and Diana Steele, president of the Crestwood Community League.
As of Friday, Watson is the only mayoral candidate listed on the city’s website.
Mayor Don Iveson announced in November that he would not be seeking re-election in October. Councillors Michael Walters and Scott McKeen have also announced they would not be running again.
Councillors Sarah Hamilton, Jon Dziadyk, Bev Esslinger, Tim Cartmell and Tony Caterina have all said they would be seeking re-election.
Councillors Andrew Knack, Mohinder Banga, Ben Henderson and Aaron Paquette have yet to announce a decision.
