Longtime community development specialist Toni Rojas has been appointed as Director of Maui Disaster Relief by the Hawaiʻi Catholic Community Foundation. The position was created to support the ongoing efforts of Catholic Charities of Hawaiʻi and the 11 parishes on Maui to aid in the recovery of the Lahaina and Kula communities, which were severely impacted by wildfires on Aug. 8, 2023.

MAALAEA Liz Morales, founder and permanent member of the wahine trio Ahumanu, will perform every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Maui Ocean Center through Monday, Sept. 6, 2021 (Labor Day). Having released four albums and performed worldwide, Morales will share her signature sound with a focus on Hawaiian mele. “We are so absolutely delighted to welcome Liz to the Maui Ocean Center as part of our Ocean Aloha family program launch this month,” said Toni Rojas, director of marketing.

The aquarium on Maalaea Bay northwest of Kihei, which attracted 442,000 visitors in 2019, closed last March 17 as the state issued stay-at-home orders and other regulations to combat the spread of coronavirus. Like most everyone, we were thinking optimistically. We thought we d be through this relatively quickly, director of marketing Toni Rojas said.
By June, management realized the pandemic was unfortunately not headed in the right direction, and a plan for a long-term closure was needed.

The Maui Ocean Center is reopening Friday after a 10-month closure, bringing back in-person ocean education, family-friendly experiences with marine life and a joyful but COVID-19-safe environment, the ocean center said Tuesday.
The park’s doors closed March 17 due to the pandemic and are now set to reopen in three phases that include the addition of an online reservation system.
