A group of Kiwi cricketers and coaches who fled Covid-ravaged India arrived in Auckland aboard a private jet on Saturday night. The cricketers who landed just after 8pm on Saturday at Auckland Airport left India after the Indian Premier League was suspended. In the past week the country has experienced an average of nearly 400,000 cases per day, while 238,000 people have died in India of Covid-19 since the pandemic began. The group of cricketers travelled on a Bombardier Global Express private jet via Tokyo, in the first of two chartered flights repatriating players. They went into managed isolation upon arrival and a second flight was expected to leave India on Saturday night.

Cricket authorities have been rushing to evacuate players and support staff after the lucrative Indian Premier League was abandoned this week. India reported 3,980 deaths and more than 412,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours.

Auckland, May 8 : New Zealand Test players Kane Williamson, Mitchell Santner and Kyle Jamieson, who were playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), have opted to spend extra days in Maldives instead of India after their entry in England was delayed by a week.
The three have flown to Maldives from where they will travel to England after about 10 days. They were supposed to fly to England from New Delhi on May 11 according to initial plans after the postponement of IPL.

The first group of New Zealand cricketers returning from India following the postponement of the Indian Premier League arrived in Auckland last night on a charter flight.
Black Caps Trent Boult, Jimmy Neesham, Finn Allen, Adam Milne and Scott Kuggeleijn all arrived home from the Covid-19 virus-ravaged country via Tokyo. They were joined by Mike Hesson, James Pamment and Shane Bond who have coaching and management roles in the IPL.
