Brainerd s Ben House fired a 71 to earn medalist honors for the third time this season, nipping teammate Justin Heitkamp by one shot, as the Warrior boy s golf team finished second by four strokes in a conference meet at Cold Spring. Coach Tom Younghans said House gets better and better as he recovers from a broken leg last year.

Tony Bonsante should be proud. He didn t win the national Golden Gloves welterweight title, but he s the second-best at 147 pounds. “It was an even, hard-fought match,” said coach Tom Herron, “but I thought the other kid did win it.” It was a split decision, 3-2. Bonsante felt he won the first round, but lost the last two.

The Brainerd Jaycees will donate $204,458 to non-profit organizations from the proceeds of its 11
th Annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza, held in January on Gull Lake. Ed Vobejda, contest chairman, said that Confidence Learning Center will receive 70 percent of the donations, or $143,140.

It was a stunning weekend for Warrior athletes. Gymnast Julie Beasley won the state Class AA title in vault, scoring a 9.9 of 10.0 from all judges. Lance Hoff finished second in the 50 free at the state swim meet, breaking the school record. And Warrior wrestler Kirk Hayes took third in the 140-pound state Class AA division.

Some valuable timber has rested on the bottom of Gull Lake since the early 1900, when it sank on the way to sawmills. A law allowing recovery of this valuable resource was passed by the legislature, but may be amended. Lake property owners say the recovery will adversely affect water clarity when sediment is disturbed.

The Warrior boys basketball team rebounded from a disheartening forfeit loss for inadvertently violating the playing time limitation, to score a 62-58 win at Willmar, where they hadn t won since 1979, a stretch of 10 games. Brainerd junior Kyle Smith scored a career-high 26 points as Brainerd moved to 12-2 on the season.
