These are people who who are coming by to drop off water to drop off toiletries, you know, paper towels, anything thats needed, nonperishable food. And the red cross has set up the shelter here at the war memorial gym. This is where a lot of the people who lost everything in that devastating fire are coming here. As you know, youve seen all of those images. This region has been devastated. Maui. Massive wildfires have ripped through the island for the past three days, burning down thousands of structures and some say they had almost no warning before the flames hit the fires surrounded their homes before they could even get out, there was nowhere to go. Were being told by officials here that the focus is quickly turning to rebuilding despite the widespread destruction, there is some cautious optimism among residents and business owners. Many of them lost everything in these fires, but theyre now thinking about how to move forward. Line is such a special place for so many visitors that come see us every year. Its the historic significance and just the memories there. And that will mean plenty of help from the feds as well as state and local governments. Theyve already ramped up their response. Opening shelters for thousands who were forced to evacuate and now private aid groups are starting to show up in big numbers as well. The red cross is here. The people are so kind.

Search and rescue teams get into the houses burned. Support has been pouring in since the first images of the fires came out. This united boeing 787 left sfo with supplies from the red cross. And there were similar scenes at the airport in moneta where we caught up with some of the volunteers doing what they can to help the victims. About a dozen people with the red cross based here in the bay area have left for hawaii and now more are on the way. Both tom tanner and michelle aver is headed to honolulu first on two week deployment. They know they will get to maui but will adapt to the changing needs of the situation. They will assist government leaders on the ground coordinating the response to the wildfires. One aspect is a unique challenge for the red cross. They are prepared for this assignment. This is on somebodys worst day of their life. They are there. They dont have a place to stay. We have to stablize stabilize the situation it is a special place. I got married there in maui.
