Three Kenyans Picked for TED Fellowship Programme

The TED Fellows Program announced the names of 20 fellows who will be joining the Class of 2021, and among them are three Kenyans.
Each TED Fellow was selected for their remarkable achievements, the potential impact of their work, and their commitment to community building.
The lucky Kenyans who made it to the list were identified as Jim Chuchu, Kaz, and Tom Osborn.
Jim Chuchu
Jim Chuchu is a filmmaker and founder of The Nest Collective, a Nairobi-based artist group. His film
Joining Kaz is a filmmaker and cultural innovator Jim Chuchu and mental health innovator Tom Osborn.
Kaz is an educator building a positive and safe space for sexual discourse in Kenya through her podcast and TV segment, The Spread.
Through these platforms, Kaz continues to illuminate and confront the pleasure gap, challenges, restrictive LGBTQ+ policies and emphasises on reproductive rights.
Chuchu is a filmmaker and founder of The Nest Collective, a Nairobi-based artist group.
His film, Stories of Our Lives, celebrates the narratives of Kenya’s queer community in the midst of pervasive societal censure.
He is also the founder of the HEVA Fund, the first organisation in the region dedicated to making capital investments in the creative sector and building financial infrastructure around creative pursuits in East Africa.

Shipton led the class of fourth-year students, who were divided into groups of four. Each group selected the design of an existing LIFEWTR bottle from which to draw inspiration in developing marketing campaign materials, including posters, vending snipes and merchandise. The winning team’s design are now being used in advertising and promotional materials exclusively on the Penn State University Park campus and in select local retailers.
“The students ended up creating point-of-sale pieces for LIFEWTR,” Shipton said. “They were provided with the bottle design and from there the students were able to develop concepts for the key imagery that they later expanded on to other collateral.”
