Staff Writer The Inter-Mountain photo by Edgar Kelley About 40 firefighters from multiple fire companies battled a blaze for close to six hours on High Street in Elkins on Christmas Day. The house was deemed a total loss. ELKINS A home on High Street has been deemed a total loss after a house fire kept area fire departments busy for close to six hours on Christmas Day. The Elkins Fire Department responded to a call at approximately 4:40 p.m. Friday afternoon and when they arrived found a three-story home ablaze. Fire crews battled the blaze until almost 11 p.m. that night.

Elkins gives city clerk $6,000 raise | News, Sports, Jobs

bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS The City of Elkins has reappointed City Clerk Jessica Sutton and given her a raise of $6,000 per year. Elkins City Council set Sutton’s new compensation rate at $54,000 per year and reappointed her for another two-year term during a recent council meeting. “Madame Chairman, it gives me great honor to recommend the approval of Resolution 1364,” Second Ward Councilman Charlie Friddle stated at the meeting. All 10 council members voted to approve the resolution. “Thank you very much for your support,” Sutton said after the vote. Sutton has been paid $48,000 per year during her current term. The City of Elkins also provided The Inter-Mountain with the current salaries of the city’s other administrative officers:

Elkins buying new garbage truck | News, Sports, Jobs

bjohnson@theintermountain.com ELKINS The City of Elkins is purchasing a new garbage truck after accepting a bid from Newlons International Sales of Elkins. Elkins City Council voted unanimously at its most recent meeting to purchase the new truck for $182,603. “It is an International truck,” Elkins Operation Manager Bob Pingley said before the vote. “We’ve gone to automatic transmission in those kind of trucks, that’s pretty much standard equipment that we normally get.” The Easy Pack G400 Sanitation Truck will be modified as part of the purchase agreement. It will be “painted to match the City of Elkins garbage trucks” and “unit lettered to the City of Elkins specifications,” according to city documents.
