On 26 September 2022, Paul Gicheru died in Kenya. The Kenyan lawyer was accused of witness tampering at the International Criminal Court (ICC), after the collapse of a big case on the 2007 electoral violence that involves the newly appointed president of Kenya. One month later, the ICC closed the case, looking away from the local investigation on the death.

What can Kenya s first case for crimes against humanity achieve?

After the collapse of all the ICC cases on the 2017 election violence in Kenya, national prosecutors have recently announced the opening of a first case for crimes against humanity implicating police officers in rape, murder and torture charges, including the death of a baby. In this new podcast, our partners from Asymmetrical Haircuts explain what this investigation could potentially lead to, with Kathy Roberts and Maxine Marcus, co-founders of Partners in Justice International, who have worked on the case with the national prosecutors, journalist Tom Maliti and a lecturer at Kenyatta University, Geofferey Lugano, for whom Kenyan justice is unlikely to go after the highest officials.
