PALISADE College of St. Benedict senior Melissa Burrell joined a snowy gathering of pipeline opponents and described it as whimsical.
Equipment being used to construct the Enbridge Energy Line 3 oil pipeline replacement in northern Minnesota sat silent that day, Feb. 21.
Burrell visited the camp founded by indigenous women along the Line 3 route and the Mississippi River with a group of 75 students and faculty from across the state. Residents of the camp, called the Water Protectors Welcome Center, demonstrate against the pipeline, rally support among opponents and pray over the water.
Burrell, an environmental studies and peace studies major, visited the camp five times at the end of 2020 and a few times this year.
