ABAP coach: Eumir Marcial needs to join Thailand camp

Published May 12, 2021, 5:07 PM Eumir Marcial (Screengrab from PSA Forum) In the eyes of national boxing team consultant Donald Abnett, it’s still a long way when it comes to the conditioning as well as the fighting form for Tokyo Olympics-bound boxer Eumir Marcial. The 59-year-old Australian made his comments Tuesday, May 11, as the boxing coaching staff advised Marcial to join the national team in its bubble training camp in Thailand. “It’s far less from what we’ve expected. It’s a bit of a concern,” said Abnett as he appeared on the online Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum with Filipino coach Ronald Chavez from their training camp in Muaklek, which is a two-hour drive from the capital city Bangkok.

Olympic athletes, coaches to receive donated vaccine; about 75 on Island

David Shoemaker, CEO and secretary general of the COC, says his organization will work with government agencies to confirm details. “We were happy to learn from the IOC that Pfizer and BioNTech will donate vaccine doses for Tokyo 2020 Games participants. In Canada this represents approximately 1,100 people and will add an important layer of protection for Canadian athletes in the lead up to and during the Games,” Shoemaker said in a statement. The COC has been saying that Canadian athletes would not jump the vaccine queue. Whether he will be vaccinated ahead of the Tokyo Olympics is the No. 1 question people ask Canada rugby sevens player Pat Kay of Duncan. “That is the main concern of the people I know,” said the Cowichan Secondary graduate, training in Langford for the Tokyo Summer Games. “So this is great news.”

Since he returned from the US last April 20, Marcial has been training in his hometown in Zamboanga City with Gerson Nietes, a member of the national team coaching staff, at the Zamboanga Valientes Boxing Gym. The 25-year-old Marcial will compete in the 75kilogram middleweight category in the ASBC, and his focus right now in training is for him to lose weight in time for the tournament.
