i mean, this isjust a way of interpreting the law. l it s not. it s, yeah yeah, it s not a political thing. i it s become terriblyj politicised, though. but the other thing is, steve, that s most interesting to an outsider, i heard an american network on thursday night debating, well, it s going to be a black woman this time becausejoe biden has said that, and maybe it should be a hispanic man or woman the time after that there s a sense in which almost the culture wars that they are supposed to try and stay above are being translated onto the court itself. well, is it? i mean, this term culture wars is pretty imprecise, it seems to me. i mean, president trump used patronage to put in all kinds of people who he felt reflected his kind of views and i imagine biden will use this space to do the same. now, there might be some tokenism in it in terms of whether it s hispanic or whatever but presumably, whoever gets appointed
about it, and it s definitely reflected in the way that they cast hijabi models. you kind of see that the brands will cast one model for, like, the entire fashion week, or a certain sector of fashion and then they lljust like oh, 0k, we have the one, we don t really need any more because we ve covered our quota. and i just wish that wasn t really how it is. i think it s called tokenism. and i ve seen a lot of other brands where they have, i i don t know, six white models and then they put one personl of colour in. but when i cast people of colour in my showsl or on my runway, it s. because i choose them because it s the real world. did you feel like a token - in any of the campaigns you ve done in the past for others? not necessarily a token but i understood that i checked many boxes. you know, on one hand i m a somali american,
and that is the problem. all right. finally, you ve talked a lot about the problems in fashion, but i put it to you that actually fashion s come a long way, hasn t it? you ve got the british ghanaian edward enninful who is editor of british vogue. you ve got lots of models of colour on the runways, in magazines. gucci has used a model with down s syndrome for one of its fashion campaigns. and the fashion critic of the washington post in the us, robin givhan, says in may this year, diversity on the runway is much more part of the norm. finally, things are not that bad in fashion, are they? well, you know, if it wasn t forfashion being progressive, people like me wouldn t be in the position that i am today. so, absolutely, fashion have come a far way. but that doesn t mean that the process needs to stop now and we self celebrate and be finished with the work. there are a lot of diversity in fashion right now, but what we re pushing forward is inclusivity where our voices matter and we
that the process needs to stop now and we self celebrate and be finished with the work. there are a lot of diversity in fashion right now, but what we re pushing forward is inclusivity where our voices matter and we re not just some tokenism. we look good on the runway but no one is really listening to us or is willing to do the advertising so that it resonates with the muslim or black or, you know, any ethnic minority background. what i m pushing forward or hoping in the future is that it s notjust a trend, it s notjust something that is happening right now. and in orderfor it to not be a trend, the people in the background who are doing the actual work, they have to be diverse as well. rawdah mohamed, it s been a pleasure having you on hardtalk. thank you very much indeed. thank you for having me.
asks, are there enough police officers to be allocated to each neighbourhood? how will this work? seven day a week provision? riley taylor says it is a good idea to have these electronic tagging as we will know who committed what crime. the new proposals are good. it is returning to a strategy that existed over a0 years ago, says another viewer, with 11,000 officers fewer than they were ten yes ago, he says it is nothing but tokenism. keep your thoughts coming in, because i would like to read out more of your comments. you can do that on twitter and use the hashtag. let s return to sport. there is a lot to catch up on. tea m team gb have done it again. this time, for the first time since 1908, two male british swimmers are finished on the podium together. as tom dean took gold and duncan scott silver in the 200metres freestyle final.
