The plan to return Mattapoisett’s youngest learners to full in-person learning was first unveiled and approved at a Dec. 7 school committee meeting, after months of advocacy for a return by a parent coalition called Mattapoisett Concerned.
The plan utilizes large, open spaces at Old Hammondtown School and Center School to accommodate students while maintaining six feet of social distancing.
The Center School Library will be used as a classroom.
The Old Hammondtown Instrumental Music Room will also be used.
MATTAPOISETT Despite comments from parents concerned about a return to in-person school, the Mattapoisett School Committee unanimously decided at a Jan. 11 meeting to move ahead with a plan to bring kindergarten, first and second grade students back to full-time, in-person learning starting Jan. 19.
MATTAPOISETT Starting mid-January, students in grades K-2 will return for in-person learning five days per week.
The Old Rochester Regional School Committee voted in favor of the in-person return in the Dec. 7 meeting. This plan affects both the Center and Old Hammondtown schools to accommodate social distancing of six feet for all students, as there is not enough space in the Center School alone. Larger gathering spaces, such as the cafeteria, library and auditorium, will now serve as classrooms for students. The full school week of in-person learning is a change from the previous hybrid plan of two in-person learning days per week and the rest remote.
