At 20 years, it lasted more than three times as long as the Second World War. More than 150,000 German military personnel experienced their first war deployment. Fifty-nine died, thousands more were injured and traumatised. The military costs alone amounted to 12 billion euros.
In its final phase, the withdrawal resembled a desperate scramble. It came after US forces began withdrawing the bulk of their troops well before the 11 September deadline set by President Biden. The last German transport planes left Camp Marmal, their transponders switched off for fear of being shot down by the Taliban.

BERLIN Things worked out quite differently than many in the media here said they would at the congress of the LINKE, the country’s left-wing party.
The pandemic had forced postponements from June 2020 to October 2020 and from last October to last weekend, with most of the 580 delegates at home in front of a screen, microphone, and camera. Only the socially-distanced, masked leaders sat in a sparsely occupied hall in Berlin. Other political parties are meeting that way too.
The bitter, possibly fatal inner conflicts, greatly feared by some, greatly desired by others, simply did not happen. Unlike the angry quarrels, hostility, and near split-ups which troubled some earlier congresses, this time there was an amiable, friendly atmosphere throughout.

Last week, we wrote that the Left Party would use its party congress to “set an even more direct course towards government participation and support for war.” This assessment has been fully confirmed with the election of Janine Wissler and Susanne Hennig-Wellsow as new chairpersons and their public appearances since then.
At their first joint press conference on Monday, the two made clear what lies behind the new party motto “Awakening in a new era” a government alliance with the pro-war and pro-austerity Social Democratic Party (SPD) and Greens now also at federal level. “If we can negotiate it reasonably, we will be ready to take responsibility,” Hennig-Wellsow said. “In principle,” she added, “we are called upon to modify policies for people in the here and now.”
