The blistering campaign for the Tamil Nadu Assembly election and the lone by-election for the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat to be held simultaneously on April 6 came to an end on Sunday.
For the 234-seat Assembly, a total of 3,998 candidates 3,585 men, 411 women and two transgenders are in the fray.
In the last election, the AIADMK had no major alliance partner. However, this time, it has the BJP and the PMK as part of its alliance. The DMK alliance with the Congress continues this time too.

Chennai, Mar 11: Arch-rivals DMK and AIADMK on Thursday almost sealed their seat-sharing deals with allies for the coming assembly elections in Tamil Nadu on the eve of opening of nominations, with both set to contest in over 170 segments each out of the total 234 at stake.
While the AIADMK is eyeing a record third straight term, the DMK is keen to dethrone its traditional rival and stage a comeback to the ruling saddle after a gap of a decade.
Keen to ensure a majority on their own in the April 6 single phase elections, the AIADMK will fight from 178 constituencies directly and the DMK from 174.

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], March 10 (ANI): The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Wednesday released its second and final list of candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections which the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has heavily criticised.
As per the second AIADMK list, former state minister Gokula Indra will contest from the Chennai Anna Nagar constituency, former Chennai Mayor will contest for Saidai Duraisami will contest for Saidapet constituency and current state minister Mafoi Pandiarajan will contest for Avadi constituency.

The DMDK had originally asked for 41 seats, but this was scaled down to 25 and then eventually to 23. However, the AIADMK did not accede, according to people aware of the matter.
Even when talks were being held earlier this month, the DMDK leadership had threatened to contest independently if the need arose.

The AIADMK “refused to allot the numbers that were sought”, the DMDK said while walking out of the alliance less than a month before the April 6 polls.
