Chadwick Boseman could make Oscar history with Ma Rainey, Da 5 Bloods

Anderson County native Chadwick Boseman could make history on Monday. The T.L Hanna High School graduate could be named in historic Oscar nominations on Monday morning, capping a phenomenal and too-brief career in Hollywood. Boseman, who died in August at 43 after a private bout with colon cancer, did not live to receive a highly-regarded Oscar nomination for his previous movies. But two movies released in 2020   Ma Rainey s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods  have ushered in a whole new level of critical acclaim. Industry publications  including Variety and EW  are predicting that Boseman is expected to get at least one and potentially two posthumous Oscar nominations and is a front-runner to win the best actor category.

Anderson County native Chadwick Boseman won a posthumous Golden Globe on Sunday for lead actor, the first of several major film awards or nominations he is expected to receive in coming weeks. Boseman, who died in August of colon cancer at age 43, posthumously won best actor for his career-best turn in Ma Rainey s Black Bottom. His wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, tearfully accepted the award Sunday over video on behalf of her late husband.  He would thank God, he would thank his parents, he would thank his ancestors for their guidance and their sacrifices, she said. I don t have his words, but we have to take all the moments to celebrate all the ones we love. So thank you HFPA for this opportunity to do exactly that. And honey, you keep em coming.

According to Anthony Russo, “This is a very simple detail, but early on when we were shooting Civil War, which was his first performance as Black Panther, it was very difficult working with him to find the specific African accent, the specific version of Africa that we were trying to craft into the fictional Wakanda. And once he cracked that character and found that accent, he stayed in that accent through the entire shoot even when he was off camera. He would only speak in that manner as T’Challa. “I think that just speaks to the fact of how deeply he had built that character and how he had to hold onto that character through the entire process in order to perform it. It’s just incredibly admirable when you find somebody who puts that level of their being and their focus and their entire effort into what they’re doing, and it translates to the screen.
