really running for re-election. neil: there had been talked that we could have another brokered agreement between a president, a one-party speaker of another party, sort of like what we had with ronald reagan and tip o neal back in the early 80s. they cobbled together something where they both gave a little and they both saved face a little. they got something done that added to the shelf life of social security but a few more decades. can you see that happening in this environment right now? especially with the market craziness. people don t trust banks anymore, they don t trust what the government is saying about anything. right. what will happen eventually, the question is when, not if, that the dollars will collapse, you know, treasury yields will sky rocket because looking at 1.5 trillion deficit this year. the average is two trillion a year over the next decades. there s so much borrowing that
we calculate testing. means testing. nobody will like them. but we have to have a the right discussion about the balance neil: we ve had a discussion in the past. . reagan and tip o neal worked together risking political capital to extend the shelf life decades more when it was on the brink. there s ways to do it. it s a very real risk of not having the proms altogether. what we had is bipartisan reforms. they did a little bit of everything and phased them in. people understood that they preserved the life by the changes. it wasn t easy but they got it done. what it took was leadership and bipartisan cooperation. now, on the other hand, we know the president s budget is coming out tomorrow. this budget as far as we know will say nothing about the social security. even though in that window the
