Young student cyclists taught roundabout safety in Timaru

Tom Taiaroa committed to improving his bowls game

Taiaroa, a member of the West End club, started playing bowls at the age of 12 being influenced by his late father Graham who had been a keen player. “Dad used to play at Park and when it closed went to West End. He also did a lot of green keeping work at Park and Kia Toa. “I was always involved growing up and it was just a natural progression.’’ Taiaroa kept playing through his years at Timaru Boys’ High School while also turning out for hockey. He tried to keep his hand in with bowls while studying for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Otago University, playing for the Kaikorai club, but with study commitments it was difficult.

Seats on Waimate to Timaru school bus unavailable for some students

School buses travelling outside a school district are not available to all students. (File photo) A shortage of seats on a Waimate to Timaru school bus is causing rising stress levels for some parents of students who have piggybacked the service in past years. In the past the students have filled spare seats to mainstream high schools such as Timaru Girls High School (TGHS) and Timaru Boys High School (TBHS) on buses that take students to state integrated schools such as Roncalli College (Catholic) and Craighead Diocesan School (Anglican). However, an increase in Waimate students catching the Ministry of Education (MoE) supplied bus service to the integrated schools for 2021 is set to leave main stream students without transport causing discussions on social media from parents of the bus-less children seeking a solution before the school year starts next week.

Well-known athletes line up for Lovelock Classic in Timaru

Bejon Haswell/Stuff Chanel Muir leads the Lovelock Mile field on his way to victory at the 2020 Lovelock Classic athletics meeting in Timaru. Chanel Muir is facing some strong opposition as he seeks to go back-to-back in the prestigious Lovelock Mile in Timaru on Saturday. The New Zealand junior 1500 metres champion was impressive in winning in 2020 in 4 minutes 15.15 seconds when just 17 years old but his repeat chances at the Lovelock Classic will be tested by the inclusion of fellow Cantabrian Tom Moulai in the 23-strong field. Moulai, 22, a NZ age group champion in 2015 and 2017 over 800m, has a fastest mile time just .61sec slower than Muir, set in Seattle in the US in February.
