Smoke that enveloped Tennessee counties in April came from the south

Remember that day earlier this month when it was quite smoky outside? It turns out the smoke wasn t coming from Oak Ridge. According to the model, smoke from prescribed burns on the Department of Energy s Oak Ridge Reservation traveled north and east, bypassing Knox, Roane and Blount counties.  Tim Phelps, spokesman for Tennessee s Forestry Division, said the state believes the clouds of smoke seen during the day were from  a number of large scale prescribed burns conducted across a wide region to the south of Knoxville on April 5. According to the National Weather Service, thousands of acres were planned to be burned in northwest Georgia, northeast Alabama and southeast Tennessee. Phelps said smoke from the large fires and wildfires may have lifted into the atmosphere and traveled to the Knoxville area, where it settled overnight.
