LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Voters are headed to the polls today for the Spring Election.
The only state-wide race Tuesday. The race for Department of Public Instruction secretary pits Pecatonica school district superintendent Jill Underly against former Brown Deer Superintendent Deb Kerr.
The biggest race for residents of La Crosse is to elect a new mayor. Vicki Markussen and Mitch Reynolds are on the ballot to become the next mayor for the city after Tim Kabat decided not to seek another term.
There are also six city council races in La Crosse.
Several school districts also have referendum questions to decide today. Bangor and Independence are each asking voters to exceed the state revenue cap for a term of three years. The Alma Center-Humbird-Merrillan School District seeks $4.9 million for new athletic facilities. In Kickapoo, the district wants $2 million to replace their aquatic center.
La Crosse students play chess with students from Dubna, Russia
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Area school students took part in an international competition in La Crosse Saturday morning.
The La Crosse Dubna Druzhba Chess Club held matches between students from Logan High School and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and students from the Dubna University and Dubna high schools.
Dubna, Russia is one of La Crosse s sister cities.
After comments from La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat and Mayor Kulikov of Dubna, the students used Zoom rooms to meet for chess matches.
Logan student William Coffey and Daria Richardson from UW-La Crosse are student liasions for the project which was organized through the La Crosse Dubna Friendship Association (LDFA).

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – At a time when those in the Asian American community have been the target of violence around the country, Thursday La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat made two proclamations recognizing the Hmong community.
The mayor recognized the Hmong New Year and the HMOOB Cultural and Community Agency on Ward Avenue as being vital for the community.
President of the HMOOB Cultural and Community Agency, Nao Houa Tony Yang says, “We are your neighbors, we are your colleagues and we are people that work in the community. So it is important to work together and that we show respect toward each other and I think that we are stronger when we unite and work together.”

LA CROSSE, Wis. - (WXOW) - Mayor Tim Kabat signed two proclamations in honor of the La Crosse Hmong community on Thursday afternoon. The event took place at the Hmoob Cultural and Community Agency.
One proclamation recognized the importance and significance of the center itself, while the other honored the annual Hmong New Year celebration that has become part of La Crosse s history. The Hmong community is a remarkable part of our La Crosse identity, said Mayor Kabat. La Crosse is a special place even more so because of our Hmong people and the refugees that came here over 40 years ago.

Town of Campbell supervisors asked the city to replace the foam before Airfest.
The foam being used now is produced with PFAS; a group of man-made compounds linked to infertility, thyroid disease, and cancer. This fall, the city tested for and found PFAS in more than 100 private wells. Since then, close to 100 other home owners have paid to their wells. All have tested positive for PFAS.
