La Crosse and Impact Seven recognized nationally for Kane Street project

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The city of La Crosse and affordable housing developer Impact Seven are being recognized by a national group for the work done on the Garden Terrace apartment complex on Kane Street.
The project was selected by the National Community Development Association as the winner of the 2021 Audrey Nelson Award, which recognizes outstanding community development projects and programs across the country.
“The Garden Terrace apartments and community center is a phenomenal example of a multi-year and multi-partner endeavor, resulting in a new development out of the floodplain, new affordable housing including units set aside for homeless veterans, and a community center in conjunction with The Hunger Task Force and Kane Street gardens. 10 La Crosse mayoral candidates address racism, budgeting amid COVID-19, other issues

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The 10 candidates for La Crosse mayor wrestled with some of the major issues facing the city, including systemic racism, budgeting amid financial pressures from COVID-19, affordable housing, and police oversight.
The racial issue prompted references to local demonstrations related to George Floyd’s death at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25, as well as the Jan. 6 riot of President Donald Trump supporters in Washington, D.C.
“This past summer, we saw the youth of our community lead on this issue,” said Jessica Olson, who now represents District 8 on the Common Council.

TOWN OF CAMPBELL, Wis. (WKBT)- A growing number of home owners near the La Crosse Airport are drinking and cooking with bottled water after learning their wells are contaminated.
110 private wells in the Town of Campbell have tested positive for a dangerous compound called PFAS. The man-made compound was used to produce the fire-fighting foam sprayed at the airport for decades. It wasn’t until the 90’s that scientists learned exposure to small concentrations of PFAS were linked to infertility, thyroid disease, and cancer. It wasn’t until this fall, The City of La Crosse learned PFAS in the ground at the airport spread.

A forum is hosted by the La Crosse Local and La Crosse Independent.
Ten candidates will be on the ballot next month.
All are invited to take part in the forum.
Current mayor Tim Kabat is not seeking a third term.
