Government should toughen use of forced labour in Xinjiang - Committees

The Uyghur forced labour in Xinjiang and UK value chains report notes compelling evidence that many major companies in the fashion, retail, media and technology sectors with large footprints in the UK are complicit in the forced labour of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Given that evidence of serious human rights abuses in Xinjiang has been widely reported over many years, the Committee says it is appalled that companies still cannot guarantee that their supply chains are free from forced labour. The report recommends the Government accelerates proposals to amend and strengthen the Modern Slavery Act 2015, to enhance the transparency and accessibility of modern slavery statements and develop options for civil penalties in the event of non-compliance.

Google and Android TV receive optimised TikTok app

Google and Android TV receive optimised TikTok app Feb 4, 2021 09:40 EST with 5 comments TikTok has announced that it s launching its new TikTok TV app for Google and Android TVs today. It said that the app was developed with home-viewing in mind with all of us spending more time at home due to local coronavirus lockdowns and restrictions. Initially, the app will launch on devices in the UK, France and Germany. Using TikTok TV, users will be able to view the most liked and viewed content on TikTok as well as popular content across other categories. Commenting on the new experience, TikTok UK’s General Manager Rich Waterworth said:

Samsung TV owners just lost an exclusive app to the Google Play Store

Until recently, Samsung TVs were the only on the market with access to TikTok. The South Korean firm, which is the biggest Smart TV brand on the planet, worked hand-in-hand with TikTok to tweak the interface to work with the landscape orientation of a television. On smartphones, TikTok presents its videos as a vertical scrolling list. Vertical video is almost always the preferred format for users on the platform, which has gained huge traction in the last year. TikTok is a pretty full-featured experience on the TV, with the app able to navigate to individual creator’s profiles, as well as sorting videos into categories. This is designed to make discovering new content easier on the TV, where users will have to use a remote control – not a touchscreen like they’re used to using with TikTok. Content is categorised into 12 categories, ranging from animals and comedy to food and gaming.
